MEDICATION WITHDRAWAL: Campus Shooting 4th in Last Week (2/15/07 updates)

Please send this press release to anyone and everyone you know.
Media reps: Please pay attention to this, if you have any desire to protect your own family from needless violence, you can make a difference and tell the truth about this story.

[It is important to remember that the shooter was also taking two other psychiatric drugs: Xanax, and Ambien.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/02/20/shooter.girlfriend/index.html?section=cnn_topstories&eref=yahoo

The drugmakers warn against stopping a medication abruptly. Ambien is also well-known, like Prozac, for inducing REM Sleep Behavior disorder. That means you act out your worst nightmares without realizing you are even awake. This has been in the news for causing sleep-eating, sleep-driving, and sleep-murder (a la Brynn Hartman). How many more sudden withdrawal cases will we have to see before someone does something to put a stop to the total lack of respect people show for the warnings against stopping a med this way? There is far too much ignorance around this, and I have seen it even from doctors and psychiatrists I have heard speak or talk to patients, even those directly speaking to me, yet they must not realize I know better. Back in 2004, my shrink told me not to stop taking Zoloft, but that if I wanted to, I could do so cold-turkey. I guess she didn't really care about her patients, but she should have known better.

For safe withdrawal protocols please see: www.drugawareness.org, www.breggin.com, www.theroadback.org, and www.tapersafely.org as well as http://www.paxilprogress.org/forums/

Amy]

From Dr. Ann Blake Tracy:

BREAKING NEWS: Big news flash for any of us! Exactly as we all expected the
news has just come out saying that this young man had stopped taking his
"medication. " Note that they have not yet said WHAT medication. But they don't
need to tell us because we already know that it was serotonergic with
horrendous withdrawal that produces the REM Sleep Disorder at a higher rate than any
other medication there is.

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) -- Police say the gunman in the Northern Illinois
University shooting rampage had stopped taking his medication recently and had become
erratic before he killed five people and committed suicide.
DeKalb County coroner Rusty Miller says there had been confusion over the
death toll. He is now correcting himself, saying that five people were killed,
not six.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information.
AP's earlier story is below.
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - The gunman who killed six people in a Northern Illinois
University lecture hall before committing suicide was identified Friday as
27-year-old former student Steven Kazmierczak, according to Florida authorities
and a university official familiar with the investigation.
Polk County, Fla., sheriff's officials said they were asked to notify the
suspect's father - Robert Kazmierczak of Lakeland, Fla. - of his son's death.
"His son, Steven, was the shooting suspect at Northern Illinois University,"
said Carrie Rodgers, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.
Illinois authorities have not confirmed the suspect's identity, but a
university official told The Associated Press it is the younger Kazmierczak. The
official spoke on condition of anonymity because the identity has not been
officially released.
The motive of the killer was still not known, officials said. The gunman
also wounded 15 people in Thursday's attack, which sent panicked students
fleeing for the exits.
"There is no note or threat that I know of," NIU President John Peters said
on Friday ABC's "Good Morning America." "By all accounts that we can tell
right now (he) was a very good student that the professors thought well of."
The shooter had been a graduate student in sociology at Northern Illinois as
recently as spring 2007, but was not currently enrolled at the
25,000-student campus, Peters said. He also said the gunman had no record of police
contact or an arrest record while attending the university, about 65 miles west of
Chicago.
He was currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said NIU spokeswoman Melanie Magara.
DeKalb County Coroner Dennis J. Miller released the identities of the four
victims who died in his county: Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester; Catalina
Garcia, 20, of Cicero; Ryanne Mace, 19, of Carpentersville; and Julianna
Gehant, 32, of Meridan.
Two other victims died after being transferred to hospitals in other
counties, Miller said. Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said a female victim
died in her jurisdiction but has not been identified pending notification of
family.
Witnesses said the gunman, dressed in black and wearing a stocking cap,
emerged from behind a screen on the stage of 200-seat Cole Hall and opened fire
just as the class was about to end around 3 p.m. Officials said 162 students
were registered for the class but it was unknown how many were there Thursday.
Allyse Jerome, 19, a sophomore from Schaumburg, said the gunman burst
through a stage door and pulled out a gun.
"Honestly, at first everyone thought it was a joke," Jerome said. Everyone
hit the floor, she said. Then she got up and ran, but tripped. She said she
felt like "an open target."
"He could've decided to get me," Jerome said. "I thought for sure he was
gonna get me."
Lauren Carr said she was sitting in the third row when she saw the shooter
walk through a door on the right-hand side of the stage, pointing a gun
straight ahead.
"I personally Army-crawled halfway up the aisle," said Carr, a 20-year-old
sophomore. "I said I could get up and run or I could die here."
She said a student in front of her was bleeding, "but he just kept running."
"I heard this girl scream, 'Run, he's reloading the gun!'"
More than a hundred students cried and hugged as they gathered outside the
Phi Kappa Alpha house early Friday to remember Parmenter, the 20-year-old
sophomore from Elmhurst, who was one of those killed.
"I'm not angry," his stepfather, Robert Greer, told the Tribune. "I'm just
sad, and I know that right now what I need to do is comfort my wife."
The campus was closed on Friday. Students were urged to call their parents
"as soon as possible" and were offered counseling at any residence hall,
according to the school Web site.
The school was closed for one day during final exam week in December after
campus police found threats, including racial slurs and references to
shootings earlier in the year at Virginia Tech, scrawled on a bathroom wall in a
dormitory. Police determined after an investigation that there was no imminent
threat and the campus was reopened. Peters said he knew of no connection
between that incident and Thursday's attack.

NOTE: Two critical pieces of information should be mentioned here.
#1 Effexor, the most popular antidepressant on the market - one Andrea Yates
was taking at the time she killed her 5 children - now has "homicidal
ideation" - constant ruminating thoughts of killing and how to go about that killing
are now listed side effects of that drug. The manufacturer based that
warning on PRE-marketing data, meaning that the company knew it could cause
homicidal ideation about 11 years BEFORE that warning was ever issued. How many
other antidepressant manufacturers are sitting on similar information on their
own drugs?
#2 In August the head of the National Instituute of Mental Health, Dr. Thomas
Insel, announced that NIH had run studies testing the chemical sister to
PCP, Ketamine, for use in depression. They found the drug immediately got rid of
depression which should have been expected because it is anesthesia! But
Ketamine and PCP are different types of anesthesias - dissociative anesthetics.
In other words it will knock you out, but your body suffers no paralysis
during anesthesia thus allowing the patient to move about even though they are
prepped for surgery.
Dr. Insel stated that antidepressants produce the same effect of this
dissociative anesthetic but take several weeks to produce that effect, rather than
producing an immediate effect. He then called for additional research to find
a drug that would be immediate in action in treating depression that would
not produce hallucinations along with it as does Ketamine and PCP and I would
add "as do antidepressants as well" - just check the package inserts.
My book on this family of antidepressants, "Prozac: Panacea or Pandora?"
first came out in 1994 with one entire chapter devoted to comparing the drugs to
PCP because they are so very similar in action. Thirteen years later NIMH
confirmed that connection. In the meantime, how many are dead, and why are these
drugs still on the market?

Mark Taylor's Testimony Before the FDA 9/13/04

"I am Mark Allen Taylor and I am a victim of the SSRI antidepressant era. I
took six to thirteen bullets in the heart area in the Columbine High School
shooting when Eric Harris on Luvox opened fire that now infamous day.

They almost had to amputate my leg and my arm. My heart missed by only one
millimeter. I had three surgeries. Five years later I am still recuperating.

I went through all this to realize that SSRI antidepressants are dangerous
for those who take them and for all those who associate with those who take
them.

I hope that my testimony today shows you that you need to take action
immediately before more innocent people like me, and you, do not get hurt or
die
horrible deaths as a result.

As Americans we should have the right to feel safe and if you were doing
your job we would be safe. Why are we worrying about terrorists in other
countries when the pharmaceutical companies have proven to be our biggest
terrorists
by releasing these drugs on an unsuspecting public?

How are we suppose to feel safe at school, at home, on the street, at church
or anywhere else if we cannot trust the FDA to do what we are paying you to
do? Where were you when I and all of my classmates got shot at Columbine?

You say that antidepressants are effective. So why did they not help Eric
Harris before he shot me?

According to Eric they "helped" him to feel homicidal and suicidal after
only six weeks on Zoloft. And then he said that dropping off Luvox cold
turkey
would help him "fuel the rage" he needed to shoot everyone. But he continued
on Luvox and shot us all anyway.

So, why did these so called antidepressants not make him better? I will tell
you why. It is because they do not work.

We should consider antidepressants to be accomplices to murder."
____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ ____
The shooting was the fourth at a U.S. school within a week.
On Feb. 8, a woman shot two fellow students to death before committing
suicide at Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge. In Memphis, Tenn., a
17-year-old is accused of shooting and critically wounding a fellow student
Monday
during a high school gym class, and the 15-year-old victim of a shooting at
an Oxnard, Calif., junior high school has been declared brain dead.
Peters said the gunman was a former graduate student in sociology at NIU,
but was not currently enrolled at the 25,000-student campus about 65 miles
west
of Chicago.

7 dead in N. Illinois U. hall shooting

DEKALB, Ill. - Another student shot when a gunman opened fire at a lecture
hall at Northern Illinois University has died, bringing the toll to seven,
including the gunman, a coroner said Friday.
Investigators and school officials did not immediately know why the man
fired
on a geology class with a shotgun and two handguns Thursday before
committing suicide.
The shooter had been a graduate student in sociology at Northern Illinois as
recently as spring 2007, but was not currently enrolled at the
25,000-student
campus, University President John Peters said.
"It appears he may have been a student somewhere else," University Police
Chief Donald Grady said. "We have no motive and I have no way of knowing
what
the motive was."
Authorities did not release the gunman's name, but Peters said he had no
record of police contact or an arrest record while attending Northern
Illinois,
about 65 miles west of Chicago.
DeKalb County Coroner Dennis J. Miller on Friday released the identities of
the four victims who died in his county: Daniel Parmenter, 20, of
Westchester; Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero; Ryanne Mace, 19, of
Carpentersville; and
Julianna Gehant, 32, of Meridan.
Two other victims died after being transfered to hospitals in other
counties,
Miller said in a news release.
He said the gunman's name is not yet being released. The gunman died at the
